Rekindle your love with your bed

Are you still in love with your bed? Does it still cradle you gently while you sleep, keep you comfortable through the night and support you properly so you wake up free from aches and pains? Does it tolerate your tossing and turning without complaining or jabbing you in the back at 3am? Do you look forward to spending each night with it, or have you found yourself longing to sleep somewhere – anywhere – else? The guest bed, the couch, the car?

If you’ve fallen out of love with your bed, we have some simple tips to help you find that spark again. And if you’ve decided it’s time to consciously uncouple, well, we have some gentle advice for that too.

Revitalising your mattress romance

Share a spa day

If it’s been a while since you cleaned your mattress, give it some special attention. Strip off the sheets and check for any marks, patches of wear or damage. Spot clean, fix up any easily repaired tears and give the whole surface a thorough vacuum – with or without a sprinkling of baking soda for freshness. Treat yourself

If your beloved bed has seen better days there are some relatively affordable ways to give it a glow-up. A mattress that has developed dips or lumps over time (and don’t we all?) might benefit from a topper that helps smooth the surface and restore the comfort you fell in love with. And if your pillow has you waking up with a crick in your neck and a serious case of bed hair, it may be time to kick it to the curb and find yourself an upgrade.

Slip into something more comfortable

Does your bedding spark joy? Why put up with just OK when you can stretch out on something more luxe? Premium natural fibres like organic cotton, linen, wool and silk are not only super comfortable and durable, they’re also breathable and moisture-wicking, helping you stay cool and dry while you sleep.

Spice things up at bedtime

When your sleep sanctuary’s not doing it for you any more, you’ll benefit from a fresh approach to bedtime. Start with a thorough clean and declutter, then consider introducing a few touches that will help you sleep better. Try a humidifier or warmer with relaxing essential oils, adopt some air-purifying plants, or experiment with sleep soundscapes to help you drift off more easily.

Know when to call it quits

It’s not always easy to move on from a relationship that’s no longer working, but it’s important to recognise when it’s time to let go.

Ideally, mattresses should be replaced approximately every 10 years. All mattress components deteriorate over time as allergens accumulate, moisture wreaks havoc, and the weight and movement of sleepers’ bodies make their impact felt. You’ll definitely enjoy more time with a well-built, high quality mattress, but nothing lasts forever.

Find your soulmate

The key sleep-regulating hormone is melatonin. This is produced by our brain when it gets dark, so we When it’s time to find a new mattress, adopt a speed dating mindset. Head into your local store and try a few mattresses rather than leaving with the first one you see. Put each one through its paces with a thorough test, and give it a chance to woo you. Don’t rush into a decision, and don’t commit to something you’ve only seen online. Remember, you’ll be sleeping with it for the next 10 years – this is one decision you need to get right!
